When you’re setting up your creative business, there are myriad things to consider in the realm of social media. No matter how small you are, it’s important to start right with a professional profile. When it comes to Facebook, this means setting up a business/blog page in addition to your personal profile.
But why do you need one? Simply put, you need to create distance between you and your clients/fans. Personal pages are for personal interaction. Both parties can see what the other posts. This means that if you are set up as a personal profile, as well as your clients seeing everything you post, you can see everything your clients post. For most of your clients, this won’t be an acceptable situation. I know that in my case, my personal Facebook profile is only for family and close friends. I post photos of my children and I talk about topics I don’t necessarily talk about with my clients. There are some brilliant quilters I would love to follow but because they’ve chosen not to have a business page, I can’t follow them because I don’t want them to see photos of my children, nor necessary know my political views.
When you set up a business/blog page, you give your clients/fans an opportunity to interact with you without you seeing any of their personal information.
A further idea to consider is to set up a VIP Group page. These are becoming a popular way of engaging with your premium clients. There is evidence that there is more interaction in groups rather than pages and you can provide special offers and promotions to these clients. I have a group page in conjunction with two fellow creative entrepreneurs as well as one for my pattern testers and one for my designers. The added advantage of groups is that they have privacy settings also – you can set them so that what it posted in the group is only seen within the group. This is particularly helpful for Mastermind or brainstorming style groups.
